Valle del Elqui: from the Himalaya to the Andes

Astronomy, Meditation, relax, clean sky, rest, history, local food, reservoirs, the birth place of the Pisco brand Elqui, and UFO ubductions are just some of the elements that make Valle del Elqui one of the favourite destinations for those looking for a magical place, spiritual connection, or a hippie dimension.

Yes, the Valle del Elqui has something special… Is located along the Southern 30º parallel, 500 km north of Santiago and 90 km east from La Serena, and among the many things you should know about this awesome mystical place the number one, its weather. In Valle del Elqui you’ll find a combination of different air masses and high pressures, the Humboldt, El Niño and La Niña currents play some tricky effects with its interaction with the atmosphere and the Cordillera. These currents, together with the thermal inversion, allow the existence of unique microclimates and wide range of climates and sub-climates. The sun shines for 340 days a year, which means that you barely see rain over there.

In Chile most Elqui-lovers told that the Valle is the magnetic center of the Earth, reason why it attracts so many hippies and passers-by who, attracted by its natural beauty, look for deep human-life answers, something dealing with the new era and entering the Piscis phase, if I understood correctely. It sort of brings it to you, clear blue sky, crystalline lakes, green meadows, and tranquility. Perfect for those who want to escape stress.

Ever heard of astro-tourism? You find it there. Lots of space observatories available ANY time of the year. Night horse riding tours and more night astronomy activities? Yes, also available in Elqui.

But let’s have a look at the legends and myths that make Elqui so special.

Some say that 2,000 years ago the unique energetic center of the Earth was located in Tibet, 30º parallel north, and it moved to Elqui, 30º parallel south. In fact, in the 1970’s, the community Gran Fraternidad Universal (Big Universal Fraternity) explained how the new location of this energetic shift led us to the Aquarius era, opposite to the Piscis era in Tibet. You can imagine how this knowledge drew thousands of pilgrims to the valley.

However, the biggest impact in all this esoteric and mystical beliefs came in the year 1985 with the Halley Comet, which brought together hundreds of communities gathered to witness the event and all its related meanings and theories. The comet was named The Messenger.

It’s hard to explain but perhaps all this energetic thrill is due to the strong sediments of magnetism and quartz, which are highly concentrated in the Cancana hill. In fact, many people coming from there experienced “something”.

Finally, the most important legend: the UFO and alien abduction.

I have to say, I need to see to believe, but I cannot deny the enthusiasm that such topic gives me.

So, UFO. This is what happened in Valle del Elqui…

It was a Wednesday of 15 years ago, and precisely 7 October 1998 at 4 pm. Two objects were falling from the hill but only one of these objects was losing control. The other kept flying around the first one as a way to assist it while falling. Both hit the hill La Mollaca twice, and finally remained on a side of the hill. Witnesses state that they felt a sort of earthquake when the objects hit the ground. 25 minutes later, several military helicopters surrounded the area and closed all nearby roads and routes. Police officers, investigator teams and militia members all reached the spot of impact. It is said that the military took control of the area without asking for permission to the Paihuano mayor.

Other witnesses state that they saw NASA logos on several vehicles reaching the hill.
One old lady said “I think the Chilean Army and NASA owe an explanation to what happened…”

    • Hahaha Tonino maybe I wasn’t clear in my post 🙂 what I meant is that Valle del Elqui is the birthplace of Pisco Elqui, the brand, not the original product itself.
I agree that the origins of pisco and limón de pica are disputed.
